TOUR SUMMARY

UPDATE FROM COUNTY 9/4/07

Cherrydale Fire Station

Here is background information about the new fire station proposal:

The Arlington County Fire Department has decided to build the new Cherrydale Fire Station on a site other than next door to the existing Cherrydale Firehouse. This goes against a mutual community and Fire Department decision in 1990-1991 which determined the new Fire Station should go to the left of the existing Cherrydale Volunteer Fire Department building, across Pollard Street on what was called the Nichols tract.

This past summer, citizens expressed concerns about where the new Firehouse would be built after a developer drew up a site plan for the land originally earmarked for the new Station. Many questions were raised about the County's failure to buy this land and its decision to rezone it for townhouses instead of the new Firehouse, particularly since Arlington County voters approved a bond issue in 1994 to acquire land and build the new Fire Station. The County Board's unanimous decision to rezone this land was made despite opposition by the Cherrydale Citizens Association and the Cherrydale Volunteer Fire Department, and despite a decision by the Arlington County Planning Commission to "table" any rezoning pending the County answering citizen questions about where the new Firehouse would be built.

As things currently stand, the Fire Department has stated it wants to move the Firehouse closer to Ballston to help handle increased call volumes there. However, there is great concern among residents about how this could affect response times out Military Road towards Chain Bridge, part of Fire Station 3's primary coverage area and an area which already has the longest response times in the County.

If you are concerned about this situation, you are encouraged to attend the meeting and also write the County Board at countyboard@co.arlington.va.us, and the Fire Chief, Ed Plaugher, at fire@co.arlington.va.us.
